Why is this important?

There are currently many containers of solar components being imported into Australia by larger companies through to backyard operators. By directly importing they can reduce costs and give the impression that they are offering a real bargain. However, under Australian law the importer is responsible for warranty on the products they import. If company A and company B import the same well known brand from China and company A ceases to operate, company B has no obligation to provide service or warranty support on products imported by company A. You could be left with having to deal directly with a manufacturer located in China, and you will have little chance of successfully obtaining service or warranty support.

However, if the manufacturer has an office in Australia you will be able to contact them and they will help you.

For example, the reputable TV manufacturers have a presence in Australia and have arranged a service/warranty network. You can generally contact them directly if you have a service or warranty issue.

For peace of mind you should ensure that the manufacturers of the major components of the solar power system have a legal presence in Australia.

A solar power system is a long term investment. You should ensure that will receive service and support for the service life of the system, otherwise the ongoing value of the system and the actual savings achieved over the life of the system could greatly reduce.

What system size is best for you?

There is a lot of conflicting information on how much a household or business might save with a solar power system, and how much power they might be able to sell back to the grid. It is important that you receive a reasonably accurate indication of how much you might save with different system sizes.

Every household is different. We can help you to determine a suitable system size. When we do a site visit we look at your previous electricity accounts and discuss the things that can increase or decrease the amount of money that a solar power system could save you on your electricity account.

How much power does a system generate?

There can be a big difference between systems.

Systems are commonly referred to as 1kW, 2kW, etc., however, this does not tell you how much power a system will actually generate or how much you might save every year.

The amount of actual power generated by a solar power system depends on factors such as the location, orientation of the roof, shading, and the efficiency of the solar panels and inverter.

We can advise on the effect of your location and other factors.

Practical efficiency of the solar panels is an important factor which should be taken into consideration when comparing systems. All solar panels are rated under a theoretical test condition, however the day to day operation on the roof of your house is totally different. Two panels rated as 180W can provide significantly different amounts of power during normal daily operation. For example, some panels are able to generate more power:

during winter, when the sun is lower in the sky
when the sun is less intense, such as earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon
when the panel is not facing true north
etc

Over a 12 month period, high quality high efficiency panels can generate significantly more power than lower cost panels.

SMA Inverters

The inverter is the "hub" of the solar power system. The inverter converts the power generated by the solar panels into power that you can use in your home and sell back to the grid.

The inverter is normally installed near your electric meter box.

Inverters come in different sizes, some have to be installed inside, some can be installed outside, and some can be installed near the ocean.

We recommend German manufactured SMA inverters:

SMA has a legal entity, an office and a support centre in Australia - SMA Australia Pty Ltd
All SMA inverter models can be installed inside or outside. They have also been treated so that they can be installed near the ocean.
Warranty is 5 years and this can be increased to 10years, 15 years, or more
The design service life is more than 20 years
New generation models have Bluetooth as standard and can upload statistical information to you PC
