Estimated Annual Hot Water Energy Cost

These annual energy cost figures are provided as a guide only. Your actual usage may be considerably more or less than the figures shown.

The estimates are based on hot water usage of 50 litres per person per day at a temperature of 60 degrees. This will almost certainly be higher, for example, if you don’t have AAA shower roses, if you have more than one shower per day, or if you have teenagers. For example, for a shower without a flow restrictor, hot water usage could be 10 litres or more per minute, so a 5 minute shower will use 50 litres of hot water. This assumes a 50/50 mix of hot and cold water. Water restrictors could bring this down to 3 to 6 litres/minute. You then need to consider the other hot water usage during a day such as washing clothes, washing/rinsing dishes, washing hands, cooking, spa usage, etc. You also need to include the water that is used while you wait for hot water to reach the tap.

If you believe that your hot water usage is higher than average, you should add one or more people. That is, the hot water usage for your 4 person family might be closer to 5, 6 or 8 people on the table below. If you think that your hot water usage is lower than average you should deduct people. That is, the hot water usage of your 4 person family might be closer to 2 or 3 people on the table below.

* Estimates for solar options assume Rinnai Enduro panels on a normal pitched roof (22 degrees) facing between north-east and north-west, and that the system is not over-boosted by more than 10%.  Actual costs will vary considerably if the roof is facing a different direction, is a different pitch, and/or if the boost switch is not properly managed.

** Many heat pumps have electric booster elements which you can’t control. The running costs will be considerably higher for this type of heat pump. The above estimates assume a heat pump without a booster element, such as Siddons Solarstream or Stiebel Eltron.

Renewable Energy Certificates - RECs. All solar hot water systems are rated by the government according to their energy savings. The higher the RECs rating the more you save on heating costs. For example, a Rheem 52S300 receives 28 RECs, a Solahart 302L receives 30 RECs and a Rinnai Prestige 330L roof mounted or 315 L split system with Enduro panels receives 35 RECs. According to the government RECs rating, the Rinnai will have a considerably lower annual hot water energy cost than the Rheem or Solahart models, which means you will save more money every year. The government RECs rating is used to determine the size of the RECs rebate. Different companies pay different amounts for the RECs. Some companies show a higher than actual RECs rebate to make it appear that their system is more efficient than it really is. A system with 35 RECs would generally receive a larger RECs rebate than a system with 28 or 30 RECs. When you get a quote you should ensure that you receive full RECs information. For each quote you should ask to see the RECs rating and the value of the RECs rebate.
